“Julie… Julie Canfield?” the voice behind me brought me out of the deep thought I had been giving to whether I wanted ranch or French onion dip on the potato chip I held in my hand. I turned to see a handsome smiling face I hadn’t seen in thirty years, since the summer after graduation.
“It’s Julie Bancroft now,” I said to my senior year boyfriend, Cal McCoy. “How are you, Cal?” I continued.
“I’m doing great Julie, and you look fantastic!” he exclaimed. “Bancroft,
eh? So, do I get to meet the guy who married the best looking girl at
Central?”
“Afraid not, Cal,” I replied, “Bill couldn’t get away to join me for the
reunion. I almost didn’t come myself, but since I missed the 25th, I
figured this one might be the last chance to see some of the old gang.
“Well, I’m glad you made it Julie, it’s so good to see you after all these
years,” Cal said, still wearing that fabulous smile that had caused me to
fall in love with him three decades ago. “Why didn’t we end up together?”
Cal asked, with a more serious tone in his voice.
“Don’t you remember?” I giggled, “You went off to the Army and I went off to
college. After about a half dozen letters back and forth I guess we both
just moved on.”
“Yeah, I guess you’re right,” he replied, “But it’s a damned shame because
you are still gorgeous!” The smile had returned.
